Greetings, first
of all, welcome to our learn Chinese website. We hope you have a fun
and pleasant visiting experience.
My name is Rosie,
this learn Chinese website is created and maintained mostly by me -
with the help of my lovely son Chris.
After years of
struggling on learning a second language - English, it is time for me
to do something to contribute back, as a way to say "thank you" wholeheartedly to the people who had helped and supported me along my
learning journey.
Talking about
learning a new language, I have too much personal experience to share,
here is a brief version:
My family moved
from China to the United States 15 years ago, to this day, I still
remember vividly the time when I first landed on this beautiful land, I
had to fill out landing forms and answer questions at the airport.
I had always been
proud of my English before that landing day ?as a matter of fact, I had
learned English by book all the years through my high school,
University and Graduate school, in a total of almost 9 years.
But, when I was
asked a few questions about my personal information by a Custom
officer, I could barely understand a single word he said. I had to
finish the process with the help of an interpreter.
You can image my
embarrassment at that moment, but the hardship just started. In the
following years, I had to struggle everyday to overcome the language
barrier, after all, class studying following the books was so much
different from real life, especially when you were taught by teachers
who did not know how to speak English properly themselves (I am not
blaming my English teachers, they did their best and I am still so
grateful for them leading me to the English language world!).
I had to learn how
to pronounce A-Z properly, everything from the beginning, well, almost
from the beginning. I have to admit, the learning was a painful and
tough journey when I had to support my family along the way.
Looking back, I am
so proud that I stuck to the end and did not give up on many of the
obstacles. Yes, I still have accent when I talk, but I can express
myself well, as a matter of fact, as a senior network and database
administrator in a large IT outsourcing organization, I have to be on
the support line most of the time talking to people.
To be more proud,
I am even offered an part time opportunity by a reputable local
technical Institute to teach an advanced computer course, I am sure my
students are not impressed by my accent, but they can care less when I
can explain the theories clearly in a simplified way, and their
feedback just proved that.
My experience
taught me: No Language
Is Too Hard to Learn As Long As You Are Determined to Learn It and
Learned It in the Right Way !
Based on my
personal experience, I can fully understand the frustration some of my
local friends are facing when they try to learn Chinese; I tried to
help them as much as I could.
One day, a new
idea intrigued me so strongly: why don't I create a Learn Chinese web
site, in that way, I can help people around the world who may need a
helping hand or just an encouraging word to keep them going forward.
And the most important, I can use my Chinese knowledge combined with my
English learning experience to lay a quicker and more efficient way for
them to study Chinese, to reduce the dreaded learning curve and enjoy
the fun and accomplishment to the overall learning experience.
